Surprise Ice Box Dessert

Recipe is from Aunt Lola.

1 cup sugar
1 pint milk
2 pkgs gelatin in ¼ cup cold water
2 egg yolks, beaten
2 egg whites, beaten
1 (No. 2) can sliced pineapple
½ cup nuts
½ cup maraschino cherries
1 small angel food cake
1 pint whipping cream, whipped

Scald milk, egg yolks, and sugar and cook in double boiler to custard. Add softened gelatin. Cool outside refrigerator then in refrigerator until slightly set. Fold in beaten egg whites and whipped cream and pour over cake, pineapple, and nuts.
